Petén, our main area of operations, is very well known as the Heart of the Maya World. It was once the center of the ancient Maya civilization, which led to cities, monuments and other cultural traces that can be found, even in the present, throughout the territory. Today, the Maya Biosphere Reserve shelters the second largest tropical rainforest on the Western Hemisphere, with an area of 17,000 sq. km.  (larger than the State of Connecticut or roughly the size of the Republic of El Salvador). It is a refuge for more than 300 bird species, ocelots, howler monkeys, jaguars and other impressive fauna. Many of these species are on the endangered species list.

The communities that inhabit this region are able to sustain themselves by managing the precious natural resources available to them.
Tikal Connection was initiated with a vision to ensure the survival of the tropical forest and the people who depend on it for their livelihood. To this end, Tikal Connection works with the local people in developing responsible tourism and non-timber forest products, thereby creating economic incentives for conservation among people who might otherwise destroy their habitat in exchange for the establishment of small farms and cattle ranching.
